Medical Schemes (“the CMS”)

I am the former General Manager Legal Services of the Council for Medical Schemes (“the CMS”), which is the
regulatory authority charged with the regulation of the entire medical schemes industry which has 8.9 million lives
covered by private health insurance and with a gross turnover of approximately R180 billion. In this regard I was
required to assume accountability for the provision of legal advice to the CMS in both internal and external matters
and assume responsibility for all litigation.
The CMS decided that the entire Executive Management Team should be exposed to an Executive coaching program
in order to further develop their leadership and management skills. A number of prospective service providers in this
field were put forward to the team and I was immediately attracted to the service offered by Mr. Neale Roberts,
partly on the basis of his prospectus, but also as a result of him being highly recommended by certain of my fellow
GM’s (Dr. Anton de Villiers and Mr. Danie Kolver) who had already commenced with the coaching program under
Mr. Roberts.
The experience was rewarding from the outset and I developed an instant rapport with Mr. Roberts, primarily
because of his interest and focus on a holistic approach to developing those areas which I was interested in
exploring. Of particular use was the initial brainstorming session wherein we carefully noted what specific aspects it
would be important to develop in my personal coaching experience. Of particular importance was him gaining an
understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses and those areas where I could add value both in my own
personal development, but also from an external perspective in enhancing my interaction with others.
In my case I certainly got more than I anticipated from the coaching sessions and found they gave me valuable insight
into both my own career trajectory and how I could leverage off my strengths while focusing on improving those
areas where I was weak. The enthusiasm which Mr. Roberts brought to the sessions was infectious and made each
meeting an enjoyable, positive and uplifting one. He also set a number of rigorous tasks for completion in order to
ensure that the sessions were properly evaluated in terms of the intended objective.
As stated above the sessions were professionally presented and administered, so as to ensure that there were
measurable outcomes.
I found in my case that Mr. Roberts added real practical value to what we had set out to achieve at the start of the
coaching program and I have taken much of what we dealt with into the next phase of my career.
I wouldn’t hesitate to be coached by Neale Roberts again and believe that further interaction with him would add
further positive input to my career trajectory.
While I am not able to make a direct comparison with other business coaches, not having been coached by them, I
am able to anecdotally refer to the experiences of my other colleagues who in some instances had negative
experiences with their coaches who made personal disparaging remarks about them, in an attempt to address the
need for a professional appearance in the corporate environment. The issue of weight for instance was raised in one
instance and caused great offence to the colleague involved. By contrast Neale Roberts focused elsewhere in
ensuring that he was able to extract the maximum potential from the executive being coached while ensuring that
important aspects were emphasised in a very professional manner. IIt was a pleasure to be coached by Neale
Roberts and the value he added in unquestionable in my view.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Neale Roberts as a Business Coach for the reasons stated above. He is a
consummate professional who approached what he does in an enthusiastic and positive manner.
In terms of what he could have differently, there could have been more interaction in the completion of the
evaluation tasks he put forward, some of which I found to be unduly onerous and unwieldy. This however did not
detract from an exceptional coaching experience from which I gained a great deal.
